How to Clean Vegetables When Buying from the Market especially street hawkers



Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease whose suspected source has been discovered through the consumption of bats. It basically originated from a meat market in Wuhan city situated in China. Most people infected with COVID-19 experience symptoms such as respiratory illness, dry cough, sneezing. We are sharing some tips to clean the vegetables when buying from the market especially street hawkers. Older people, kids less than 10 years and those individuals with underlying medical issues such as diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Respiratory ailments are more likely to catch the disease easily and other complications
Can Corona virus Spread Through Food or vegetables?
According to the FDA and WHO, no evidence has been found yet that it can be transferred through products such as fruits and vegetables. The COVID-19 spreads mainly through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose of an infected person if he/she coughs or sneezes. It’s possible that the virus can get into the food if someone who is infected, coughs or sneezes over that food or if the virus is on their hands and it comes in contact. But unlike bacteria that cause foodborne illness, the coronavirus does not multiply on vegetables and other foods. Few Measures that should be taken care to prevent the transmit of disease and protect yourself: 
  • Social Distancing
  • Hand Hygiene and Washing hands Regularly
  • Respiratory Etiquette 
  • Environmental hygiene and Disinfection
  • Drink plenty of liquids and eat  balanced diet 
  • Cleaning Methods of vegetables and fruits.

 It is important to wash all the fruits and vegetables thoroughly before you eat them, to ensure they are   clean and safe and to finally store in your refrigerator.Some examples to clean the vegetables when   bringing from outside.
  • Take warm water- put some white salt and dissolve. Dip Vegetables for 30 mins and wash them by rubbing them.  You can Use a clean sanitized cloth to dry and then store them. Wash your hands thoroughly after this with an anti-bacterial wash/soap. You can also put a drop of 50ppm chlorine in warm water and dip them in it for a few minutes
  •  Pour two tsp of apple cider vinegar -in a bucket and soak the vegetables for 30 mins,wash thoroughly and rinse with clean water 2-3 times.
  • Use a brush or sponge to clean  if necessary -while cleaning root vegetables like potatoes or carrots, a vegetables brush or sponge should be used, to ensure all dirt is removed as recommends FDA.
  • Small Amount of Antibacterial wash such as Dettol -can also be used as a disinfectant for washing the produce, take a small amount of your soap on your hands, rub and dissolve in water and put the vegetables. Rinse the vegetables thoroughly with clean water 2-3 times later. 
  • Certain vegetables and fruits require extra care- Berries require extra attention during the cleaning process. Place them in a colander and rinse them under running water to remove pathogens. Similarly, lettuce and leafy greens should be placed in a bowl of cold water. FDA also suggests removing the outermost leaves of a head of lettuce or cabbage, and then drying  them with a paper towel for best results.
In this period of covid 19 pandemic situation, it is advised that you take care of yourself and your surroundings, the food you eat and the groceries and vegetables you buy from outside, sanitize them and use so that you are safe and protected from the health hazards of COVID-19. Practice the above precautions on a daily basis and keep yourself safe.
